The whimsical world of Safariiicamp will expand this weekend, with the creative studio holding its first fashion show. ‘In Season’ which is set to feature nine designers, all of whom currently work under the same room, is a showcase unlike anything previously held in the space.

The show, which is happening this Saturday, October 24th, in the resident studio in the outskirts of East Oakland, has been described by the organizers as a product of months long discussions and planning.

We spent some time with event organizers — who are just two weeks out from making their fashion show debut. The energy in the magic treehouse is buzzing, with residents working hard away at sewing stations, even on a beautiful sunny Sunday afternoon.

Behind the scenes, sits Kathryn Wangthamkua, Elizabeth Aranda, and Nino Panes, the three event organizers pushing ‘In Season’ to fruition. We got to speak with Kathryn and Elizabeth in the Safariiicamp studio as they prepared to bring this show to life. Kathryn, (@Kn0ttykat) apart from being an event organizer, is also part of the nine designers showing work down the runway.

For Kathryn, bringing ‘In Season’ to fruition was all about personal and professional timing. “On a personal level, both like being in the right headspace creatively and in a place where I was feeling confident enough in myself and in my work to be like, this is something I want to do and something I want to showcase,” she explains.

Having the opportunity to be surrounded by other creative and driven artists within the space, further inspired Kathryn to pursue this creative vision for a show. Having had participated in a fashion show in the city beforehand, she had somewhat of an understanding behind the logistical work that went into producing a show.

Working in a creative space such as Safariiicamp, she concluded that she most likely wasn’t alone in wanting to showcase work down a runway. “I just started noticing, like, all of these people making visual art, and all these people who had big dreams of photography or interest in putting on shows, like, as a DJ, and I was like, this would be a such a perfect opportunity to make a huge show in the space that was truly a resident showcase,” explains Kathryn.

The show has become a true resident affair, with the entire production, from lighting to stage production coming from in-house talent. According to Kathryn, she started dropping the idea of having a show into internal resident conversations months ago, with the hopes that residents would self-volunteer their expertise in areas they were personally excited to get their hands dirty in.

Lighting for the show will be operated by JT, (@tinygoofs), a Bay Area based videographer, photographer, and lighting specialist. There will be a pre-show film screening of the resident interviews and documentation of the creation process, which was filmed by Icey (@iceflicks), another Bay Area based photographer/filmmaker.

The pre-show film was edited in-house by residents, Nino (@kukichagreen), Brent (@bdonskii), and Keiani (@keianidoesit). Resident DJs, @djchicaboom, @guapitoangelito, and @zaalimaa will set the soundtrack for the evening. Food will be available for purchase by Tio's Golden State Tacos.

From the beginning, kathryn never wanted this experience to feel like a forced group project, it’s all about tapping those who were already receptive to the idea. “It was less of me curating people, and more of me saying, ‘I really want you to have this opportunity, if it’s something that feels fun to you’ I didn’t want anyone to feel like they were forced to be involved in it, or to feel like they had to do it to support me,” she explains.

In no particular order, here is the list of the nine designers that are set to participate in this weekend’s showcase. It’s important to note, not all the designers come from a strict clothing making background. For some, it’s a part of a larger creative project, for others its opportunity to showcase other aspects of fashion like jewelry making.

Typically, fashion shows have a theme they center around, Fall/Winter, Spring/Summer, Resort, Bridal, Haute Couture, the list goes on. That need for a theme has been completely taken off the table with ‘In Season’ — the common denominator here is simply being a safariiiCAMP resident.

When putting together the show, Kathryn wanted the bar for entry to be as low as possible, hence the meaning behind the name of the show, ‘In Season’ — it’s a showcase of the work that’s most important to the residents in the current moment.

“With the runway, both from an access perspective and also from, like, a creative vision perspective, it just made the most sense to keep it very simple, and say that the theme is really in season. Like what’s in season right now within the designers life, and within the studio,” explains Kathryn.

‘In Season’ is an opportunity for these group of designers to showcase their work to the public in ways that's under their terms. From pieces that have been years in the making, to pieces that can be purchased right off the runway. In reality, this is a showcase of artistic passion, from a group of individuals who have centered their creative visions.

When it comes to the show itself, Kathryn is excited for people to not only step into the world of ‘In Season’, but also experience the chaotic creative energy that comes from being inside safariiiCAMP.

“I hope people walk away with a better understanding of who we are at safariiiCAMP, and what’s happening behind the scenes. (...) and so I think this is a nice way to bring people’s work into the light without asking people to purchase the work, (...) But, with that being said, a lot of our designers also sell their pieces, and this is another great way for people to be like, ‘Oh, I love that, how do I get that?’,” Explains Kathyrn.

As for the future of ‘In Season’, well that’s to be determined, and is something that’s not super pressing on the minds of the residents. The magic behind the event is its focus on showcasing the current stage of production within the studio, for Kathryn, she only hopes that this show inspires further collaboration within residents.
