Mostly, I’m keeping an eye out for interesting takes on whatever topic is trending on Twitter (I’m still not calling it x). I’m on the search for conversation starters right here in the Bay Area. To loosely quote the musical genius, FKA Twigs, I guess you could say I’m on the hunt for the great thinkers of our generation.  For those tapped into the local content creator scene, the username @matcha.mix might ring a bell. If it doesn’t, let us introduce you to one of our favorite creators working to push forward conversations about Bay Area culture. Outside of his love for Tyler the Creator, skateboarding, fashion, film and the occasional art history take, Ryan, AKA Matcha Mix, has a lot to say about the current state of the union.  Like many other social media creators, Ryan started his account talking about things that interested him. During those early days, videos revolved primarily around the Tyler the Creator universe. Like any true fan boy on the Internet, his videos centered around fan theories, album reviews, tour speculations and his clothing brand. Though his content has shifted away from this, you can still find it sprinkled in his videos today. A key aspect of his content creation philosophy has remained the same — make things that people will find interesting.  “I think people can talk a big game about like, ‘oh I’m just gonna make this for myself, and, like I don’t care if anyone sees it,’ at a certain point, especially if you’re doing videos speaking, like, you do want people to see it,” he explains.  It’s this perspective that’s garnered him a following of over 40k on TikTok, amassing over 16 million likes across all his shared content. One of the first videos that came across my feed from Ryan was a TikTok he uploaded last year where he talks about the best way to “Stretch a dollar in San Francisco.” As a certified girl-on-a-budget, I was hooked. From that moment forward, his videos started to appear more frequently on my fyp. One of the first things I noticed was how wide-ranging his video topics were — unlike most content creators in today’s digital landscape, who stick to their niche, Ryan wasn’t afraid to get involved in local cultural politics.  Originally from Lakeview, growing up in the city had a significant impact on his worldview.  “It [Lakeview] used to be one of the most violent neighborhoods in the entire city. Now, it’s actually, statistically, the safest neighborhood in the entire city, and you wouldn’t think that” States Ryan. ”It’s not, like, Pack Heights, like, you don’t get off, and see all these boutiques, and, like, people walking their golden retrievers, you get off, and it’s somewhat residential,” Ryan states.  In my conversations over the years with Bay Area natives, there’s always been this key central theme to growing up here: community. Whether from Oakland or the outer neighborhoods in the peninsula, community feels like it has been almost completely lost. One could say that the Bay has always been at the forefront of innovation, from the dot com boom in the late 90’s to the AI takeover currently grappling its empty streets. From telling folks about the importance of voting in local elections, to discussing how certain policies passed by the current (Laurie) administration are affecting neighborhoods, like the Tenderloin, negatively.  In the world of the internet, audiences will oftentimes try to put creators into a definitive content box. Since shifting into a more political space online, Ryan hasn’t felt the need to label himself as a political influencer. In a digital landscape that rewards figures who choose to lean into the political grift of it all for engagement, Ryan has a different philosophy for approaching the space entirely.  “The example I always cite is that, by numbers, one of the biggest celebrity commentators is Candace Owens, [the right-wing media personnel], and I think it’s so effective [the right-wing space] because they have a lot of people who can just meet you where you are and talk about topics that you’re probably genuinely interested in,” explains Ryan.  These “online commentators” set up a perfect getaway point for audiences to fall down the political alt-right pipeline Ryan explains, “And then all of a sudden you’re like, well, I actually kind of trust this person because they had a good take on Hailey Bieber — and then it’s like, ‘oh, whoa, like they are saying I should support JD Vance. I think we [the left] could use more of that.”  For Ryan, the decision to start using his platform to post more political content wasn’t for engagement, but simply an act of local civic duty. He believes that having more creators online that you could trust with movie recommendations, cultural takes, music and the occasional political take is how we push more people away from that side of the internet.  In a digital age of hyper-surveillance and self-policing, the viewers are always waiting for creators to say the wrong thing. It’s not enough to be politically aware if you don’t have a clean political digital footprint — you’ll lose credibility, so to speak, amongst certain online circles.   Everything is inherently political — trying to avoid the [red] elephant in the room, specifically on a platform so polarized by it, has become the new norm. Creators trying to build a platform on neutrality can only get so far before they, too, have to draw a line in the sand. Unlike other cities in California, say Los Angeles, where content creators might have an easier time avoiding local politics, it would seem that creators stationed in the Bay are pulled by their audiences to speak on issues happening in their own backyard more often than not.  “I’ve had this thought for a long time, but a lot of people who move to the Bay or to the city just aren’t terribly interested in actually living in a city, or living in a place like the Bay Area. They want to come here and make it bend to them and their desires and their individual view of safety,” he explains. It’s this inherent desire from outsiders to make the city bend to their ‘image’ that has left SF in an identity crisis since before the pandemic. The blind millennial optimism that once dominated the culture has come and gone, and its wake has left an aging population and mass AI-powered psychosis. Now, it feels like people are moving to the city in search of digital gold, with no consideration for the various neighborhoods they occupy. In search of community, Gen Z transplants have turned to digital advertising — using apps to pair up with strangers, taking online recommendations from other outsiders who run everything through chatbots.  The Bay, according to Ryan, works when folks embrace it for what it's traditionally always been — a hub of cultural innovation & exploration. Not in the way that’s been rebranded by tech companies, but in the way that brings people together from all walks of life and presents them with the opportunities to create something new together.  For Ryan, the future looks like continuing to push the cultural envelope ever so slightly, whenever given the opportunity. I think we [the left] could use more of that.”  For Ryan, the decision to start using his platform to post more political content wasn’t for engagement, but simply an act of local civic duty. Unlike other cities in California, say Los Angeles, where content creators might have an easier time avoiding local politics, it would seem that creators stationed in the Bay are pulled by their audiences to speak on issues happening in their own backyard more often than not.  “I’ve had this thought for a long time, but a lot of people who move to the Bay or to the city just aren’t terribly interested in actually living in a city, or living in a place like the Bay Area. They want to come here and make it bend to them and their desires and their individual view of safety,” he explains. It’s this inherent desire from outsiders to make the city bend to their ‘image’ that has left SF in an identity crisis since before the pandemic. The blind millennial optimism that once dominated the culture has come and gone, and its wake has left an aging population and mass AI-powered psychosis. Now, it feels like people are moving to the city in search of digital gold, with no consideration for the various neighborhoods they occupy. In search of community, Gen Z transplants have turned to digital advertising — using apps to pair up with strangers, taking online recommendations from other outsiders who run everything through chatbots.  The Bay, according to Ryan, works when folks embrace it for what it's traditionally always been — a hub of cultural innovation & exploration. Mostly, I’m keeping an eye out for interesting takes on whatever topic is trending on Twitter (I’m still not calling it x). I’m on the search for conversation starters right here in the Bay Area. To loosely quote the musical genius, FKA Twigs, I guess you could say I’m on the hunt for the great thinkers of our generation.  For those tapped into the local content creator scene, the username @matcha.mix might ring a bell. If it doesn’t, let us introduce you to one of our favorite creators working to push forward conversations about Bay Area culture. Outside of his love for Tyler the Creator, skateboarding, fashion, film and the occasional art history take, Ryan, AKA Matcha Mix, has a lot to say about the current state of the union.  Like many other social media creators, Ryan started his account talking about things that interested him. During those early days, videos revolved primarily around the Tyler the Creator universe. Like any true fan boy on the Internet, his videos centered around fan theories, album reviews, tour speculations and his clothing brand. Though his content has shifted away from this, you can still find it sprinkled in his videos today. A key aspect of his content creation philosophy has remained the same — make things that people will find interesting.  “I think people can talk a big game about like, ‘oh I’m just gonna make this for myself, and, like I don’t care if anyone sees it,’ at a certain point, especially if you’re doing videos speaking, like, you do want people to see it,” he explains.  It’s this perspective that’s garnered him a following of over 40k on TikTok, amassing over 16 million likes across all his shared content. One of the first videos that came across my feed from Ryan was a TikTok he uploaded last year where he talks about the best way to “Stretch a dollar in San Francisco.” As a certified girl-on-a-budget, I was hooked. From that moment forward, his videos started to appear more frequently on my fyp. One of the first things I noticed was how wide-ranging his video topics were — unlike most content creators in today’s digital landscape, who stick to their niche, Ryan wasn’t afraid to get involved in local cultural politics.  Originally from Lakeview, growing up in the city had a significant impact on his worldview.  “It [Lakeview] used to be one of the most violent neighborhoods in the entire city. Now, it’s actually, statistically, the safest neighborhood in the entire city, and you wouldn’t think that” States Ryan. ”It’s not, like, Pack Heights, like, you don’t get off, and see all these boutiques, and, like, people walking their golden retrievers, you get off, and it’s somewhat residential,” Ryan states.  In my conversations over the years with Bay Area natives, there’s always been this key central theme to growing up here: community. Whether from Oakland or the outer neighborhoods in the peninsula, community feels like it has been almost completely lost. One could say that the Bay has always been at the forefront of innovation, from the dot com boom in the late 90’s to the AI takeover currently grappling its empty streets. I think we [the left] could use more of that.”  For Ryan, the decision to start using his platform to post more political content wasn’t for engagement, but simply an act of local civic duty. He believes that having more creators online that you could trust with movie recommendations, cultural takes, music and the occasional political take is how we push more people away from that side of the internet.  In a digital age of hyper-surveillance and self-policing, the viewers are always waiting for creators to say the wrong thing. Unlike other cities in California, say Los Angeles, where content creators might have an easier time avoiding local politics, it would seem that creators stationed in the Bay are pulled by their audiences to speak on issues happening in their own backyard more often than not.  “I’ve had this thought for a long time, but a lot of people who move to the Bay or to the city just aren’t terribly interested in actually living in a city, or living in a place like the Bay Area. They want to come here and make it bend to them and their desires and their individual view of safety,” he explains. The blind millennial optimism that once dominated the culture has come and gone, and its wake has left an aging population and mass AI-powered psychosis. Now, it feels like people are moving to the city in search of digital gold, with no consideration for the various neighborhoods they occupy. In search of community, Gen Z transplants have turned to digital advertising — using apps to pair up with strangers, taking online recommendations from other outsiders who run everything through chatbots.  The Bay, according to Ryan, works when folks embrace it for what it's traditionally always been — a hub of cultural innovation & exploration. any other chronically online 26-year-old, I find myself spending a significant amount of time scrolling through TikTok these days. Mostly, I’m keeping an eye out for interesting takes on whatever topic is trending on Twitter (I’m still not calling it x). I’m on the search for conversation starters right here in the Bay Area. To loosely quote the musical genius, FKA Twigs, I guess you could say I’m on the hunt for the great thinkers of our generation.  For those tapped into the local content creator scene, the username @matcha.mix might ring a bell. If it doesn’t, let us introduce you to one of our favorite creators working to push forward conversations about Bay Area culture. Outside of his love for Tyler the Creator, skateboarding, fashion, film and the occasional art history take, Ryan, AKA Matcha Mix, has a lot to say about the current state of the union.  Like many other social media creators, Ryan started his account talking about things that interested him. During those early days, videos revolved primarily around the Tyler the Creator universe. Like any true fan boy on the Internet, his videos centered around fan theories, album reviews, tour speculations and his clothing brand. Though his content has shifted away from this, you can still find it sprinkled in his videos today. A key aspect of his content creation philosophy has remained the same — make things that people will find interesting.  “I think people can talk a big game about like, ‘oh I’m just gonna make this for myself, and, like I don’t care if anyone sees it,’ at a certain point, especially if you’re doing videos speaking, like, you do want people to see it,” he explains.  It’s this perspective that’s garnered him a following of over 40k on TikTok, amassing over 16 million likes across all his shared content. One of the first videos that came across my feed from Ryan was a TikTok he uploaded last year where he talks about the best way to “Stretch a dollar in San Francisco.” As a certified girl-on-a-budget, I was hooked. From that moment forward, his videos started to appear more frequently on my fyp. One of the first things I noticed was how wide-ranging his video topics were — unlike most content creators in today’s digital landscape, who stick to their niche, Ryan wasn’t afraid to get involved in local cultural politics.  Originally from Lakeview, growing up in the city had a significant impact on his worldview.  “It [Lakeview] used to be one of the most violent neighborhoods in the entire city. Now, it’s actually, statistically, the safest neighborhood in the entire city, and you wouldn’t think that” States Ryan. ”It’s not, like, Pack Heights, like, you don’t get off, and see all these boutiques, and, like, people walking their golden retrievers, you get off, and it’s somewhat residential,” Ryan states.  In my conversations over the years with Bay Area natives, there’s always been this key central theme to growing up here: community. Whether from Oakland or the outer neighborhoods in the peninsula, community feels like it has been almost completely lost. One could say that the Bay has always been at the forefront of innovation, from the dot com boom in the late 90’s to the AI takeover currently grappling its empty streets.
